The Center for Social Competence is a cross-faculty institution of the University of Graz. It is the joint response of the University and the Graz University of Technology to the challenges facing graduates.
The center - founded in 2000 by Ao.Univ.-Prof. Mag. Dr.phil. Klaus Scala - enables students to acquire key skills that are in demand or required in the working world as a supplement to their studies.
We offer students of the University of Graz and the Graz University of Technology courses in social skills: communication, cooperation, conflict resolution, project management, social responsibility, etc. The courses count as credits of degree programs. Our teaching is based on scientific research and combines theory with enriching practical experience. 1200 students take advantage of our offer every year but demand is twice as high! Our responsibilities include researching relevant subject areas and organizing public lectures, conferences, and other events.
Our mission
The Centre for Social Competence contributes to a functioning democracy in a global society. We empower students to develop answers to individual, professional and social challenges by strengthening their skills in communication, self-organization, individual development, cooperation and social responsibility.
In addition to our teaching activities we also conduct research on questions of social competences. Furthermore, we organize public events such as lectures, conferences and exhibitions addressed to wider audience aiming to transfer scientific knowledge into the social discourse.
Our stance on diversity
We are guided by the principles of equality, equal opportunities and anti-discrimination. We are committed to diversity-appropriate and inclusive topics and also demand this attitude from our students and lecturers in our teaching.
